So my job experience consists of the most random jobs, jobs I won't mention...unless you ask, of course, but retail was never on that list until about a month ago.
Most of us work retail and I bet most of us hate it too. If you love retail, please explain to me one thing? HOW THE FU-Actually, I think I might get it a little bit (the minimal amount we are capable of understanding).
Sure, most of my coworkers are really nice, it's like we're forced to make new friends - which I'm in dire need of, so no complaints here. And sure, I get to personally witness the most corky people I've ever came across, they have absolutely no shame, and it's the way I like it, but being anywhere in retail for 12-40+ hours a week is kind of like a Lady Gaga song. Repetitive and a-a-a-nnoying a-a-annoying.
We're constantly have to hear the same terms and there's no getting away from them because, well, they're key terms that basically makeup everything the job entails. So here:
From Me To You - Top 5: Sentences you'll absoultuley hate after working in "(fashion) retail", (a term I use verrrry loosely):
1)Go backs (racks) - "Are there any go-backs?"
If you haven't worked for retail, a .go back" is simply a rack of clothes customer tried on in fitting room, that they usually had no intention to buy, that weren't purchased. By the end of the night there can be up to 4+ racks to put back. Definitely more frustrating than I ever could imagine. You'll here this word over 100 times during a six hour shift.
2) Greeting - "Hi, how are you!?"
I'm good, you?"...but what you're really thinking is - "Fuck off, you asked me how I was feeling about two seconds ago you piece of shit".
I honestly enjoy greeting because maybe 4 times out of 10 the person is really kind and I get a good conversation out of it.
3) Detailing - "Are you guys all detailing?!"
Detailing is making sure every thing in in size order, in a certain color scheme, organized by sleeve length and sorted by material. Sounds easy, right? You're wrong! Don't forget all straps and tags are tucked in, hangers are all leveled, buttons are buttoned, zippers are zippered and anything else that sounds completely anal. Detail. Detail. DETAIL.
4)"Where are your _____, I saw them here last week? *rolls eyes*"
I get it, you want that last size 4 but it's gone and theres nothing I can do about it. I'll truly help you as much as can but realize that retailers setup usually changes every 4-6 weeks and items are moved around the store daily, I'm trying me best here, lady!
5)Availability - "Are you closing?"
I think it's safe to say that 90% of conversations start with something pertaining to time.
Annoying sentence in retail number 5.
All in all, I've come to conclusion that my lack of interest in "fashion retail" is reason why these things slightly bug me...if I worked at a record shop however....
By the way, I means this in the most light hearted way possible - don't be offended, okay? I'm in no way complaining, I find this funny and so should you! I'm also being slightly dramatic.
Agree/disagree? Got any retail terms/sentences you hate? Habits daily customers do that annoy you? Anything? Post them down below!
